This week is Parents In Sports Week. The NSPCC is using this week to focus on the importance of parents in sport, and also the importance of sending positive messages to young athletes, as we support them in their sports, and life, goals.

Parents play a vital role in supporting their children, and as role models. Check out these videos, produced by the NSPCC, to learn about what you can do as a parent to make sport fun for your child, and to support them whether they are playing for fun, or training with aspirations of competing at a high level.

Whatever age your child, and whatever their sporting ability, we hope that they're having fun in our sessions, and that they're getting something out of their training - friendship, confidence, discipline, exercise or entertainment. We believe that sport is for everyone, and we'd like to say thank you to the parents who bring their children to our sessions and to the competitions for being such positive role models and for fostering a positive culture.

Get Rolling is a six-week course to introduce young people aged 11-25 to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Get Rolling has been made possible by Sportivate, a Big Lottery funded programme inspired by the 2012 Olympics to help people try new sports and get active. Thanks to Sportivate, Sport England and Tyne & Wear Sport we can offer this intro course to young people under the age of 25 for just £10. That's £10 for the six week course, as well as other optional beginner's sessions during the course period.

You can register now, and the next course will begin on Saturday October 15th. Sessions will run from 1:30PM-2:30PM, for six weeks, and it is run by Origin BJJ Newcastle at:

If you complete the course (attend at least five out of the six Saturday sessions), then you can take advantage of a month of membership to Origin BJJ Newcastle, which gives you the option of attending any of the 14 training sessions held at the club each week.

This 6 week course will cover the basics of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA, including takedowns, striking, pins, escapes and submissions. Learn how to defend yourself or control an opponent in a range of positions and situations.

In addition to the Sportivate sessions, while you are on the course you may attend the Thursday Beginner's BJJ session and the Saturday MMA session at no extra cost. These additional sessions are not compulsory, but are a good way to explore the sports in more-depth and learn more techniques.

The Six Week Plan

Over the 6 week course you will cover:

  • How to use punches to set up a takedown, how to control someone on the ground and perform an armbar (your first submission), and how to escape if someone is pinning you to the ground.
  • Kicking and punching, and an introduction to the 'guard' in BJJ, and how to pass to a dominant position.
  • Self defence - protecting yourself against haymaker style punches and taking the fight to the ground. Also, how to "breakfall" and "technical standup" if you are taken down and don't want to stay on the ground.
  • How to perform a double leg and a throw. Also, how to break someone's posture in the guard to protect yourself, and set them up for submission attempts.
  • Takedown defence, followed by a look at the most dominant positions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, mount and back control. You will learn how to set up and complete the "rear naked choke".
  • How to use the clinch to control an opponent, what you should do if someone tries to clinch up with you, and how to escape from a headlock.

Club Tournament: If you enjoyed these sessions, you can take part in a submission grappling competition (takedowns, pins and submissions only, no striking) against other club members of a similar level of experience. This is entirely optional, and will take place on a weekend, after the course is completed.

Why Try BJJ/MMA?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a practical martial art that relies on timing and leverage to control and submit your opponent. MMA includes wrestling, striking and grappling, and allows you to learn to defend yourself in a range of situations. Because both sports involve regular sparring, you get a chance to test your skills in a safe environment, get fit, and figure out what works and what does not. Who Can Join?

This Sportivate-supported course is for anyone aged between 11 and 25 who is interested in trying BJJ or MMA for the first time. If you are within that age group you qualify for the £10 intro course. You don't need to be particularly athletic, and it doesn't matter whether you are trying the sports for fun, fitness, self defence, or with dreams of one day becoming an active competitor. Everyone is welcome.

Do I Need any Special Equipment?

All you need is a t-shirt/rashguard and shorts/tracksuit bottoms. Thanks to support from ISOS Housing, we have equipment that you can borrow while you are taking the intro sessions, and can offer advice on the best equipment to buy if you decide to keep training. If you do have a gumshield, gloves, hand wraps or shin pads, then we suggest you bring them along, but they are not required.

Do I Need to Be Fit/Have Past Experience?

You don't need to be fit to start BJJ or MMA, and you don't  need any previous experience to attend the intro and beginner's classes. Don't worry about "getting fit" before you start. Just come along and do what you can in the classes; if you try your best your fitness will improve from week to week.

Even if you have some previous martial arts experience, it's a good idea to try a few of the beginner's classes. There is a lot of crossover between Judo and BJJ, for example, but the footwork and stances used in Taekwondo and Karate are rather different to what is usually used in MMA.

I Have a Disability, Can I Still Train?

We try to make the classes as accessible as possible. If you have an illness, injury or disability that you are concerned may affect your ability to train, just get in touch and let us know your concerns. We will work with you to try to sort something out. The beauty of these martial arts is that most impairments can be worked around, and most moves can be modified to suit your individual body type and ability.

What Happens When The Course is Over?

When the course is over, if you attended at least five out of the six sessions, you will be given a one-month free membership to Origin BJJ Newcastle so that you can continue your training. After that, you will have the option of continuing your membership at a rate of £45/month for unlimited sessions each month. There is no obligation to continue your membership, however. If you don't expect to be attending often enough to make that membership level worthwhile, there is the option to pay per session.

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training Programme is a three-hour practical workshop complemented by eLearning that will support you before and after the training. The learning will help improve your knowledge, competence and confidence in delivering sports-based activities to disabled people. The first workshop is on Sunday, October 18th at 1:15PM, and registrations are open now.

Improve your confidence in delivering activities to disabled people

The Sainsbury’s Active Kids 4 All Inclusive Community Training has been designed to support the following groups to develop the skills and confidence to include disabled people in sporting activity:

  • Day care workers, community center volunteers, etc
  • parents, guardians and carers
  • healthcare professionals
  • volunteer sports coaches
  • community group leaders

The training consists of a three hour workshop, and a 45 minute module of interactive, online learning to help you prepare to take part in the workshop.

Building on the knowledge gained through the online learning, during the workshop participants will undertake a range of practical activities which will enable them to:

  • Learn about practical tools to support inclusive delivery
  • Explore creative ways of supporting disabled people to take part in physical activity and sport
  • Complete a workbook that will support participants activity sessions after the course
  • Discover local opportunities to take part in inclusive sports

These learning objectives are achieved by focusing on the different elements of the Inclusion Spectrum and STEP. You will have the option of trying out different activities, or creating your own based on your chosen sport, so you should come away with lots of ideas to add to your sessions.
